How to convert to WebP without wrecking quality

Why WebP beats PNG and JPEG for the web

WebP carries a modern block-based lossy codec, a true lossless mode, animation and an alpha channel in a single format. In practice an equivalent-quality WebP is roughly 25–35% smaller than a JPEG and 60–80% smaller than a PNG, which is why it became the default image format of the web.

Smaller images mean faster Largest Contentful Paint, which is one of the Core Web Vitals Google uses as a ranking signal — so converting is a real SEO move, not just housekeeping.

Transparency, animation and the edge cases

WebP keeps an alpha channel, so PNG logos, product cut-outs and illustrations with transparent backgrounds convert cleanly. Do not route those through JPEG output: JPEG has no alpha and the tool flattens it onto white.

Animated GIFs are a special case: the browser hands the canvas only the first frame, so treat GIF conversion as a single-frame export.

Converting back, and what to keep

Nothing is destructive: files are read from disk and written as new downloads, so your originals stay untouched. You can convert WebP back to PNG when a print workflow or an older CMS demands it.

If you need metadata such as copyright or camera settings, keep a master copy outside this tool — re-encoding through a canvas intentionally drops EXIF.

Privacy by architecture

Nothing is uploaded — and you can verify it

Privacy claims are cheap, so this one is falsifiable: the app has no upload code path at all.

  • The upload step simply does not exist

There is no POST route, no S3 bucket and no signed URL in this app. Open DevTools → Network, compress a 5 MB photo and watch the request list stay empty apart from the page itself.

  • Your files live in a blob URL

Images are held as in-memory objects and blob URLs that the page creates and revokes. Close or reload the tab and they are gone — nothing survives, because nothing was stored.

  • Metadata is dropped, not kept

Canvas re-encoding writes a fresh file, so EXIF geolocation and camera metadata are not carried over. That also means you should keep your own copy of the original when metadata matters (copyright fields, for example).

WebP conversion FAQ

What the format does, where it is supported and which quality setting to pick.

What is WebP and why convert to it?

WebP is an image format from the Chromium project that supports lossy and lossless compression plus animation and alpha transparency. Converting PNG or JPEG to WebP usually cuts the file size by 25–80% at the same visual quality, which directly improves page speed.

Is WebP supported in every browser?

Yes — Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari 14+ and every mobile browser have supported WebP for years. Even older Safari versions fall back gracefully in most setups, and you can always keep a JPEG copy for niche tools.

Does converting PNG to WebP keep transparent backgrounds?

Yes. WebP supports an alpha channel, so transparencies survive the conversion. Be careful only if you choose JPEG output, which cannot store transparency — the tool flattens it onto white in that case.

What quality setting should I use for WebP?

75% is the sweet spot for photos and screenshots. Go to 85–95% for detailed product shots or text-heavy graphics, and 50–65% for thumbnails and background images where some softness is invisible.

Can I convert WebP back to PNG or JPEG?

Yes — this is the same engine in reverse. Load your WebP files and pick PNG (lossless, larger) or JPEG (small, universal) as the output format. Nothing is uploaded either way.

Does converting images to WebP hurt SEO?

The opposite: smaller images improve Core Web Vitals like Largest Contentful Paint, which Google uses as a ranking signal. Search engines index WebP images normally as long as your markup references them correctly.
